Iris transition

An iris transition uses a circular mask to reveal or hide a shot. It focuses the viewer on a center point and can make a cut feel theatrical without adding clutter.

When to use it

Use it around circular UI, loading states, avatars, record dots, or logo marks. The mask should open from a meaningful point.

Common mistakes

Iris transitions with no subject; opening from the exact center by habit; using it too often in a short film.

Iris exists in Impractical's transition and logo vocabulary. It works especially well when a small shape in the UI becomes the next full frame.
